Watching the overall dimensions and loads

The mass and axle loading implications are discussed in this thread. In terms of overall dimensions, we have to watch the "overhang" and the risk of the vehicle now colliding with something:

Transfer station

In this example, the overhang is 2.8 meter, which is 70% of the wheelbase. Some countries will specify a legal limit on the allowed percentage of overhang.

Regarding the overall dimensions, some people have had expensive surprises at their transfer stations. They discovered that they hit the back wall when they open the tailgate, or that they enlarge their doorways when they drive out. The lifter shown above is a very compact model - there are much bulkier lifters, mainly the automatic ones with fixed barrier arms.

The increased overall lengths also affect the length needed for workshops, washbays and parking lots.
