The Overall System - from generation to disposal::

Is there still a place for the sack, or bag, in containerised waste handling?

In the Mainz area of Germany, a transparent yellow bag is now used for re-cyclable plastic. This form of waste has a very low density and the light weight/mass of the filled bags are easier for the operators to handle than the relatively heavy wheelie bin.

I also remember reading of a system in a Nordic country where the residents separate their waste into thick-walled, colour-coded bags. All the bags are compacted together into the same truck, with very few bags breaking. On discharging the truck, an automatic sorting system detects the bag colours and sorts them out accordingly.
